Sport priorities for Berwick

Sports development in Berwick is to be a priority for Active Northumberland, the new charitable trust that is running the Swan Leisure Centre.

Over the coming weeks, residents in and around the town will be consulted to find out the type of sports and leisure clubs they would like to see operating from the centre.

A county sports development officer will also work from the centre two days a week to progress this work and it is hoped that new activities that residents need and want will start to be laid on early in the new year.

Depending on the outcome of the consultation, this could include anything from conventional sports such as football and table tennis, to more innovative activities such as dance and wave boarding.

Active Northumberland is a charitable trust that manages leisure facilities and services throughout Northumberland on behalf of Northumberland County Council.

At the beginning of October, the council formally brought nine main leisure centres in the county together under Active Northumberland, securing long-term contractual arrangements, employment and protecting the service for the future.

Following a visit to the Swan Centre to see how the new arrangements are working, Scott Dickinson, chair of the county’s Health & Wellbeing Board, said: “It was fantastic to see so many children enjoying their sports classes and to meet the dedicated teachers and volunteers who run them.

“The feedback I have received so far is that the transition in the management of the centre has been relatively smooth. Jobs have been protected and all the familiar faces and classes are still there.

“One of Active Northumberland’s priorities now is to introduce some exciting new activities into the spring programme and encourage more people to take part in exercise and activity.”

Active Northumberland is already working closely with local sports clubs and is about to start a 12 week boxercise class in conjunction with Berwick Youth Project.

If anyone has any suggestions about activities they would like to see at the Berwick sports centre, please email them to Graham Keefe at GKeefe@activenorthumberland.org.uk
