Northumberland County Council has re-affirmed its commitment to the future of the Swan Leisure Centre in Berwick.
It follows concerns raised at a recent meeting of Berwick Town Council at news Active Northumberland, which runs the leisure centre, had written to the County Council for a non-refundable grant of up to £1 million to support the charity this financial year.
However the council has moved to reassure residents about the future of the facility.
At the council’s budget setting meeting last week members confirmed their commitment to the leisure centre, approving £2.5 million in capital investment in the site.
Northumberland County Council Business Chair Scott Dickinson said: “Protecting and improving local services is a priority for this council and I want to reassure the people of Berwick and surrounding areas that we are committed to the future of the Swan Centre.
“We understand there may have been local concerns but there is no need for people to worry. We’re investing in the future of the Centre and look forward to it prospering into the future.”
Earlier this month, council leader Grant Davey said they the council was working to ensure there is a credible recovery strategy and programme in place to put Active Northumberland back on its own two feet.
He also urged residents to play their part by continuing to use the services, a vital part of local communities, to help make them financially viable.
