More sad news for North Northumberland

General Mills today announced a proposal which could lead to the closure of its manufacturing facility in Berwick, United Kingdom.

The proposal is subject to consultation with union officials and employee representatives, which could lead to the closure of the site by the autumn of 2016.

If implemented, closure of the site would affect approximately 265 employees.

The Berwick facility manufactures baking mixes and refrigerated and frozen dough products. It has been operated by General Mills since 2001.

Councillor Scott Dickinson, business chair of Northumberland County Council said: "This is very worrying news for us in the county, and particularly for the staff who work in the factory, which has been a big employer in the town for many years. While it is only a proposal at this time we will be looking at what support the council can give to the workforce over the coming months."
