Northumbria Healthcare Trust is now developing plans to deliver a new hospital in the heart of Berwick-upon-Tweed which will benefit the local communities in North Northumberland.
The plan is to build the new hospital on the existing town centre site of Berwick Infirmary. Frontline clinical teams in Berwick are now on board and have shared their views on how services can best work for those in need of treatment locally to reduce the travel distance to Wansbeck Hospital.
Northumbria Healthcare is fully committed to delivering all of the services currently provided from Berwick Infirmary in the new hospital and is also working with Northumberland County Council’s Health and Wellbeing Board to finalise how the new development can help further integrate health and social care services in Berwick.
The newly developed plans for Berwick hospital are being financed through a loan with Northumberland County Council whose Health and Wellbeing Board are delighted that staff are favourable towards the new build scheme.
Councillor Scott Dickinson who also Chairs Northumberland County Councils Health and Wellbeing Board said: “This is another example of the county wide Labour administration backing the NHS and Berwick itself. This new hospital will mean excellent healthcare, good quality jobs and real partnership working will be at the heart of Berwick for many years to come. I want to praise both NCC and NHC finance staffs who have worked tirelessly to put together an affordable finance package which will see traditional interest payments cut allowing savings made to be invested in frontline services and I’m looking forward to working with partners to deliver a hugely important healthcare investment for Berwick in the short, medium and long term”.
