International Workers Memorial Day – Protect the Worker

Today is International Workers Memorial Day #IWMD14 but on Saturday I attended the Ashington, International Workers Memorial Service to pay my respect to the people who lose their lives at work every year.

Unfortunately, every year people die in the workplace often because employers decide workers’ safety isn’t a priority.

I heard some shocking examples of Health and Safety not being put into practice from the Trade Unions. Ian Lavery and Ronnie Campbell, MP’s  then led a procession from the Elephant Public House, Ashington to the Peace Garden in Ashington, where a service was held.

Listening to the accounts from Ian and Ronnie highlighted for me why we must continue to work with our Trade Union colleagues to protect workers’ rights, not only at a local and regional level, but on an international scale.

I say that this Tory led government are wrong to say that health and safety rules are a burden on employers. The government continues to cut health and safety enforcement, which will lead to an injured and unwell workforce, for which the taxpayer will have to foot the bill. This year we have seen an increase in deaths due to what I believe is the watering down of Health and Safety legislation. This leaves some poor families without a partner, brother, sister, son or daughter not to mention the extended hurt throughout friends and other family members.

If you know of any Health and Safety issues, please report them to your employer or your union. If you receive no response, please contact me
