European Local Democracy Week 2015

Students from four Northumberland schools have been taking an active part in local democracy week.

The group have been meeting members and officers, discussing elections, and taking part in e-voting and a ‘Question Time’ with a panel of councillors chaired by Councillor Scott Dickinson, Business Chair.

Topics discussed included the Labour Party leader, Jeremy Corbyn; Trident, voting ages and the legalisation of cannabis.

The students also heard about ways to join and take part in the Northumberland Youth Cabinet and Parliament.

The event aims to strengthen links between elected representatives and communities and boost participation and knowledge, and to facilitate cooperation and the exchange of good practices between communities.

Scott said: "It was a wonderful morning, students had fantastic questions on lots of serious topics, we had some fun with Evoting too. They were all young people to be proud of in the future, well done everyone and thank you for coming".
